Why Developers Choose Passive House

During NAPHN's 2020 global conference, the organizers created the first-ever Owner's/Developers Roundtable where building owners and developers shared the reasons they chose to pursue Passive House. Local Pittsburgh celebrities, Derrick Tillman, CEO of Bridging the Gap and Nikole Sheaffer, Chief Innovation and Outreach Officer at The Environmental Charter School, joined North American peers Kathleen MacNeil, Principal, MP Boston; Fran Coen, Managing Director, Clark Realty Capital; and Ben Ohebshalom, President, Sky Management Corp. in a discussion about their individual decision processes to ultimately commit their projects to the Passive House Standard.

One particularly insightful comment came from Kathleen MacNeil, MP Boston. "When Winthrop Center became available...Millennium really wanted to go beyond what we had done in the past, and we always use our past projects to see how we can do better. When we started to understand the components of Passive House-- it really went beyond LEED and it went beyond sustainability--it pushed toward carbon neutrality and supported the idea of healthy buildings and extra fresh air."
