The Language of Decarbonization

Depending on one's position in a company, the challenge of decarbonizing existing buildings is either a strategic imperative (C-suite) or a distraction from the real work of driving productivity (facilities management). It's like there are two languages in play and the two groups don't speak each other's language primarily because they define success differently.

The only tool that exists to translate between the two languages is a performance digital twin, calibrated against historical building performance. Now, to be clear, AUROS Group does not have any skin in the game in the selection of digital twins. We are users of these tools. We don't develop software in any way. We are consultants that specialize in both building science and data science. We are expert at using tools, such as performance digital twins, to connect the interests of the C-suite with facilities management.

When making investment decisions, company executives and day to day facilities managers care about three pieces of data. The first is what impact will this decision have on building performance (energy use, carbon emissions, thermal comfort, occupant satisfaction, etc). The second is how will this decision affect first costs (how much will it cost and what kind of payback will I get). And, the third is how will this decision impact long term operating costs (meaning, am I making my building more expensive or less expensive to operate).

Using a performance digital twin to answer those questions, we eliminate the disconnect between executive interests and facilities management interests. Most people have no idea that physics-based modeling and simulation utilized to make design decisions is the key to aligning stakeholder interests during the operation of a building or campus of buildings.
